To say Mario is no stranger to spinoffs is like saying there\u2019s something a little off about Luigi \u2013 it\u2019s not only obvious but also incredibly understated. From teaching typing<\/a> to playing doctor, kart racing, and even beating up his friends and family in Smash, the little plumber\u2019s reach knows few bounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Given just how far and wide the\nMario games have spread, we have to wonder: what would a Grand Theft Mario look\nlike? Sure, Super Mario Odyssey is already fairly open world, but it hardly\noperates under the same scheme as Rockstar\u2019s flagship series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spent an afternoon thinking\nabout this idea, and this is what we came up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This might sound crazy but bear\nwith us. What if, and this is just hypothetical mind you, what if Bowser\nkidnapped Princess Peach? As ridiculous as this sounds, it could easily work as\na basis for getting Mario out of the house, and into the world of Mushroom\nKingdom and beyond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the way Mario would meet a\nwhole host of friends and rivals, gaining their trust, and experiencing the\nbetrayals of the likely suspects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know the pattern by now, and\nas in every modern Mario game, the strength would have to lie in how the\nclassic tale is told, not in the most basic overall structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gameplay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The gameplay is the real\nstrength of Mario, and this is where the real opportunities lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the least, the player would\nneed access to Mario’s full repertoire of moves, including long jumps, high\njumps, wall jumps, and butt stomps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of weapons, all the usual suspects could make appearances, from the classic fireball up to Cappy<\/a> and his infinite bizarre forms. This could also allow us to bring back some of the underrated and forgotten about power-ups from yesteryear.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring back the SMB3 Tanooki suit so we can practice our Dodo like flying again, or bring in Wario\u2019s Cap that we might be disgusted at how badly Mario let himself go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, no GTA game would be\ncomplete without grand thefting autos, and this is another area where Mario\ncould shine. With decades of kart games to choose from, getting around in a\nGrand Theft Mario game could be amazing, with all the shortcuts and boosts\nwhich make these games special. Include all of the kart power-ups, and maybe\neven translate more traditional power-ups into the karting mode, and we\u2019d have\neven more to play with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
