The Most Obscure Super Mario Facts!

Super Mario is a gigantic franchise, with so many stories to tell within its world and its characters. However, there are some undeniable hidden facts about Super Mario that haven’t been talked about much. So, this is a list of the most obscure Super Mario facts!

1. THE STORY

The first fact is that Super Mario was originally released in 1985, however the character himself was created four years before that in 1981! He was the protagonist of the popular game known as Donkey Kong. In that game he didn’t have an official name, so he was called “Jump-Man” who had to avoid the oncoming barrels and save the woman in danger. That woman is now assumed to be “Princess Peach” who went on to become one of the most popular Super Mario characters ever!

2. MARIO’S NAME WAS INSPIRED BY

This story is from way back in 1981, when Nintendo was renting a warehouse in the middle of Tukwila, Washington. They were using that warehouse as a headquarter within the United States of America, and according to NPR, a man called Mario Seagle left a huge impression on the tenants from Nintendo. The man left such a huge impression on the tenants that when they were designing the iconic character, they ended up naming him Mario! He even dressed like the video game character counterpart according to NPR, with suspenders and a hat!

“Gaming historian Benj Edwards stated in 2010, a close associate of Segale’s confirmed that he wasn’t very tall and wore suspenders rather than overalls.” You too can play at home at the best online casinos in your overalls!

3. HE ISN’T JUST A PLUMBER!

Throughout his 35 year old franchise, Mario has gone on to do more than just plumbing! Originally, Mario had started as a carpenter in Donkey Kong (1981) before he took on the job of being a plumber in the original 1985 game. However, over the course of the 255 games that he’s been featured in, he has done over 10 different jobs. The jobs are listed below.

  • Carpenter
  • Plumber
  • Doctor
  • Racer
  • Martial Artist
  • Baseball Player
  • Soccer Player
  • Basketball Player
  • Pro Golfer

4. MARIO’S GOT A COUPLE GUINNESS RECORDS UNDER HIS BELT!

In all honesty, Super Mario is an iconic character with hundreds of games so it makes sense that he’s got a couple Guinness records under his belt! Here are some of his most notable ones:

  • The voice actor for Mario named Charles Martinet, holds the world record for most featured voice in video games.
  • As bad as it could be, Super Mario Bros movie was the very first film adaptation of a video game that was ever made.
  • He has the world record for the most prolific video game character yet.
  • He also holds the record for longest running video game franchises.
  • Not to mention, Mario is also the world’s highest best-selling videogame series of all time.

5. POPEYE INSPIRED MARIO

A very lucky licensing mishap led Shigeru Miyamoto to creating Super Mario! The original intention was to create a Popeye game, including characters such as the titular hero Popeye the Sailor Man, Olive and Brutus. However, Nintendo couldn’t acquire a license for the characters and had to come up with an original character. This was how the Donkey Kong video game was created in 1981.  I bet Popeye played at real money pokies when he had free time!

The funny thing about all this is that a year later, Nintendo did manage to get a license and did indeed create a very similar game called Popeye. It was just the same as Donkey Kong, but instead of jumping over the barrels; Popeye would punch them and break them.
