Question Mario Timeline?
WHOA, I actually thought of something to post again! I wonder how many people will even see this XD anyways, yes I'm blurting out more Mariology stuff... warning: this post is crud-buckets full of my mindless rambling.

-------------------------------------------

For series' like LoZ, there is a direct and plain timeline - it is logically shown that one game preceeds or follows another game, regardless of their order of release; and that's pretty cool.

I've always kind of wondered how the Mario series might fit together in a timeline - I mean, sure, there are plenty of non-canon games and probably a few that could only fit with parallel universes etc, but considering there's so many games in the main storyline (and my obsessive need to fit continuity and ense into the Marioverse) it's always been in the back of my head while playing. And I wonder this because the adventures that Mario goes on, and the characters that are met, and the relationships around main characters might have different meaning if given a temporal context.

- It's fair enough to say that Yoshi's Island is first in the timeline (I cannot think of a place to put Yoshi's Island DS).

- And then comes Donkey Kong, closely followed by stuff like DK Jr, Wrecking Crew, etc. Mario Brothers being the obligatory end of the line regarding the original arcade games.

-Super Mario Brothers was the first adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom, it appears generally accepted, but stuff gets hazy from thereon - SMB2 and SMW seem like they'd occur some time after SMB1, because you don't go for a holiday/have a picnic in the middle of nowhere with people you've barely met XD

- It seems arbitrary, considering Mario Galaxy 1 cannot be placed on the timeline, but as I understand it, Galaxy 2 is a direct follow-on, so there's that.

Other things I thought about for a while is that maybe the characters' interactions may give some kind of non-specific, touchy-feely kind of idea about whether a game is in the early or late part of the series. For example, there are games where Mario and Peach are very much involved and obviously paired off, while in others, they're moreso friends, or they're less connected - the latter of which I assume to be earlier on in the 'timeline'. In some games, Bowser is very childish and more of a silly character, while at other times he's more brutish and serious - I honestly can't think of whether he changes from serious to playful or vice versa, because Bowser's psyche (from the little I know of it) is reasonably complex. In some games, the Mario Brothers are more well-known by people in general - this would lead to the assumption that it's later on in the game, or it's set shortly after one of the bigger adventures.

I don't even know where to begin with the Koopalings and Bowser Jr, and the different powerups in the MK at any time also seems like some kind of indicator - just a really confusing one, I guess.

----------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I know I overthink all this jazz, but it sure as hell beats forum inactivity - you guys got any thoughts or idea on this topic?

RE: Mario Timeline?
SMB2 is all a dream. Also, there was some theory that SMB3 was all a stage act.
I feel like Yoshi's Island DS takes place after The original Yoshi's Island (with Island WiiU after DS Tongue)
Soe have speculated that SMW is non-canon, but I can't see either way.

RE: Mario Timeline?
SMB2 seems to be more than a dream, I dunno - unless Birdo, Shy Guy and Bob-Omb were just involved in the game co-incidentally. If I'm not mistaken, the game involved a call for help in a dream, followed by Mario 'waking up', going on the adventure in that same world from his original dream, and then waking up again. It could be no more than a dream, but there might be other forces at work in that, no real way to tell.

That deal with Yoshi's Island DS makes sense, though - thankyou for clarifying, I've never played the game.

Super Mario World non-canon? Can you link any source for that speculation? I'd love to read it, I'd be surprised considering how relatively sensible and mainstream SMW appears... for a Mario game...

RE: Mario Timeline?
** WARNING: EXTREMELY LARGE POST. **

Here's what I think.

Since I'm nice, I listed these by US release date or the launch date of a first in a series of games, what type of game it is, and US character debut date.

Maybe, I will update this list from time to time.

1. Main Games

Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. is going to fit before Super Mario Bros., seeing how no reference of Peach, Toad, Luigi, or any of the enemies from Super Mario Bros is in the two. The Podoboo enemy may be an exception, but I can't be sure.

Mario Bros. is going to fit as being before Super Mario Bros., since there is no reference to Princess Peach, Toad, or any Super Mario Bros. enemy. I don't think Shellcreepers are Koopas. They are most likely an earlier version of Koopas. But, you can say what you believe.

Super Mario Bros. is going to fall under being after the Donkey Kong arcade series, and between the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

Japan's Super Mario Bros. 2 is going to take place right after Super Mario Bros., since it has the same exact storyline as Super Mario Bros.

USA's Super Mario Bros. 2 is probably going to fit in nicely after Super Mario World (doesn't that sound weird?), but Yoshi is not invited for some odd reason. He may just be having trouble with the kids. I don't know. But Super Mario Bros. 2 is most likely going to have no place in the timeline, since it was all a dream.

Super Mario Land would most likely come place after or before Mario Party 3, seeing how Daisy is introduced as a character in the third Mario Party game. But, I can't be sure, though, it's most likely before Mario Party 3.

If Super Mario Bros. 3 was all a stage act, there would be a flood in the theater during the underwater levels. I can see why it's assumed an act, due to the title screen and ending having a curtain and all, but still. Chronologically, Super Mario Bros. 3 happened somewhere after the events of Super Mario Bros., or the events of Japan's Super Mario Bros. 2.

Super Mario World may have happened after Super Mario Bros. 3 in some way, seeing how Mario is adult in this game, which I should not have to point out.

However, I do have an explanation for the message where Yoshi introduces in this game, so I can patch a big plothole, and just in case some people don't understand.

I know Mario paired up with Yoshi in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but he was an infant at this time, and seeing how fuzzy our memories of when we were infant are, Mario at this time probably could not remember who Yoshi was, since he only seen Yoshi as an infant.

In other words, Yoshi was only a memory of Mario's infant age, rather than his adult age, so he most likely did not remember Yoshi.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is obviously at the beginning of the timeline, since at this point, Mario is an infant. Although, Yoshi's Story may steal this game's place of being the earliest point...

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars will most likely fit after Super Mario World, since the Yoshis are included here, and some Super Mario World-like elements are in this title.

Super Mario 64 has a possibility being after Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. (despite what I'm going to say for New Super Mario Bros.) due to how Yoshi is surprised to see Mario, obviously meaning they haven't seen each other for a long period of time.

Yoshi's Story could take place after or before Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but here is my theory.

Unfortunately, this game may steal the place of being the earliest point of the timeline, which is currently being held by Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, since the main characters are Baby Yoshis, and they distinctively look very similar to the main Yoshis of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. But, if Yoshi's Story taken place after Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, then the Baby Yoshis in Yoshi's Story must be descendants of the Yoshis from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

The Paper Mario series probably happened after Super Mario World, due to Super Mario World-like elements, Yoshis, and such. There is a possibility is may also come somewhere after or before Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, due to distinctively similar gameplay. However, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door may have taken place after Super Mario Sunshine, due to inclusion of Shine Sprites in the game.

Luigi's Mansion will most likely take place after Super Mario Sunshine, Since there is speculation that King Boo in this game actually references Mario defeating him in Super Mario Sunshine, in the Casino section of Sirena Beach.

Super Mario Sunshine may take place before the events of Luigi's Mansion, see above.

The Mario & Luigi series may as well fall under being after Super Mario World and before the events of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, due to mentioning of Yoshis.

New Super Mario Bros. is probably going to be before Super Mario 64, or perhaps during Super Mario 64, seeing how that godforsaken eel, Unagi, some elements from Super Mario 64, and some level elements from Super Mario 64 is included in this title.

Yoshi's Island DS would most likely have taken place during Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, if the DS version hadn't thrown that into the shredder and given us an adult Bowser. But, my theory is that the Bowser in Yoshi's Island DS was the present Bowser's father.

As for both Super Mario Galaxy titles, both most likely would have come sometime right after Super Mario Sunshine, seeing how Pinatas make an appearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii from here on out most likely happened after or during Super Mario World, due to tons of elements from Super Mario World, and the inclusion of Yoshi.

Super Mario 3D Land probably happened during Super Mario Bros. 3, for obvious reasons.

2. Spin-Offs

I am not going to explain every spin-off, just those that relate to the series.

Wrecking Crew would most likely be after Mario Bros., and before Super Mario Bros., seeing how this was around the time Luigi was introduced into the Mario series.

Mario Kart has no point of being in the timeline, but seeing how Yoshi was in the first Mario Kart, my guess is that the series started taking place after Super Mario World.

Mario Party suffers the same fate of Mario Kart, which is having no point of being in the timeline, but if it does, I'm going to say it starts to take place after Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, because Wario is featured in the first title.

As for Mario is Missing! or Mario's Time Machine, Mario is Missing will most likely fall under being after Super Mario World, since in Mario is Missing!, You are able to ride on Yoshi. As for Mario's Time Machine, it's going to fall under after Super Mario Bros. 3, despite Yoshi having a portrait in the NES version of Mario's Time Machine.

Hotel Mario most likely happens after Super Mario Bros. 3, seeing how Koopalings got sucked up into this train-wreck of a game.

The Wario Land titles will most likely fall under being after Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, or if you want to get technical, after Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins.

Mario Tennis (not including or to be confused with the Virtual Boy title, Mario's Tennis) and Mario Golf, despite again, having no point in being in the timeline, may have happened after or before Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, seeing how Wario is included in both of the launch titles of the series, but Mario Golf happening a little earlier than Mario Tennis, since Daisy and Walugi is included in the first title of Mario Tennis, so Mario Tennis would have came after Mario Party 3.

The Virtual Boy title, Mario's Tennis (not to be confused with the Mario Tennis series) is going to come after Super Mario World, seeing how Yoshi is included.

Mario Clash for the Virtual Boy will fall under being after Super Mario Bros. 3, seeing how Boos are included.

Wario World is most likely going to fall under being after the events of Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, and possibly during Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, since Wario's self-built castle makes an appearance here, after Mario reclaimed his castle in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins.

The Mario vs. Donkey Kong title are all screwed up in the timeline, they would have happened all together, except how all Mario vs. Donkey Kong titles kind of sends that theory into the garbage bin, seeing how Toad and Peach are in the game as a mini version, like the Mini-Marios.

But I can probably explain this.

The Mario vs. Donkey Kong series may have happened between Super Mario Bros., Seeing how Princess Peach, or at the time of Super Mario Bros., Princess Toadstool, and Toad were featured in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, but as a mini version, like the Mini-Marios. Basically, the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series could fit in between Super Mario Bros.

Super Princess Peach may fall under being after or before Super Mario Sunshine, seeing how Petey Piranha is included, but not the Pinatas.

3. The Characters

I am not going to explain every character, just those that need explaining.

The big Subcon enemy timeline ordeal is simple: The Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs, Snifits, etc. were all a part of Mario's memory from when he was an infant, if he is able to remember so. The Shy Guys and co. were all living since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

The Koopalings and Bowser Jr. would most likely be placed around the time during Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Koopalings, and Super Mario Sunshine for Bowser Jr.

** TIMELINE EXPLANATION ENDS HERE **

Sorry if I didn't explain some things a little more, I worked hard on this timeline theory when I was extremely sleepy, which was from Midnight to 6:21 AM.
I will edit anything that doesn't quite sound right, that is, when I'm actually much more rested.

Goodnite to you all.

RE: Mario Timeline?
My first gripe is with SMB2 USA - what exactly indicated that SMW occurred first? Also, Yoshi could live on a different continent, for all we know, so it's no big point whether he attends certain occasions, I don't reckon.

Also, in regards to character introduction times and stuff - I like to think that the timeline isn't limited to (or based off) the chronological release order of games. That's just me.

Yeah, I don't think SMB3 was a performance - partly because it seems like such a normal inda SMB story, and partly because there are just certain things about a game that is there for the sake of the game (Toad probably never told Mario to press 'A' to jump, that's just there to adapt the story to a new form, know what I'm saying?)

And might I point out that that thing to do with Mario's ages in SMW and SMB3... it doesn't make any sense, he's only had one indication regarding his adult ago across the board - which was that he's 26, according to some Melee trophy or something (which I always figured would be a good age at which to pinpoint his entry into the Mushroom World - God knows what possessed me to decide that).

And I'm not sure about games with newer content therefore being later in the series - I mean, yoshis have always existed in the world, even if they only appeared after SMW. Shy Guys were quite probably around before SMB2 (that said, they appear to be from some kinda alternate dimension, as the Shy Guy's Toy Box sorta created a second reality for them in Paper Mario). In the same way that I don't think Piantas being in Sunshine, Strikers and Galaxy 2 makes them all immediately connected in the story. That said, SMRPG probably did come after SMW, because Yoshi and Mario were already acquainted - good call!

Well, it's true that King Boo does appear again in Sunshine, one way or another - I always speculated that King Boo was Bowser's ghost, but who knows?

I can't imagine NSMB occurring alongside SM64 - I mean, Mario can only be in one place at a time XD but they could be at a similar time. I've never considered games taking place within or during other games, somehow I don't see it happening just because events clash

I quite often thought that the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games were later in the series, despite involving DK - and that's because it involves a franchise regarding Mario - so he's probably had some time to slow down and be very public and commercial for a while *shrugs* that's just my reasoning

RE: Mario Timeline?
Yeah, my argument with New Super Mario Bros. being smashed with Super Mario 64 was pretty crap. Like you said, it may have happened around the same time.

I only lined up the list in release dates and such for easy reference, so you don't have to poke around in the list for two hours to find a game or whatever.

I have no idea why I put Super Mario World in front of Super Mario Bros. 2. I may have done it for the hell of it.
But, as I had said, Super Mario Bros. 2 may have never happened.

As for the age argument, I have no idea why I even left that in the post. It was mindless drivel, so don't mind it.

RE: Mario Timeline?
Forget what I said about SMW being non-canon, I was tired and feeling stupid. Actually, I'm pretty sure that SMW is SMB 4.

I feel like Wrecking Crew should be before Mario Brothers, maybe he tried a job in that area, but did not like it so he went on to be a plumber in Mario Bros.

I have no idea where in the timeline he got into rescuing a woman from a giant ape. Tongue

Should we even include spin-offs in a timeline?
